ESTA, eTA
& the Mexican FMM.

Most overseas supporters need authorisation before they fly. Each of the three host nations has its own pre-clearance system. Get all three right and the borders disappear — get one wrong and your tournament is over before kick-off.

  • USA · ESTA — visa-waiver passport holders apply online via the official CBP portal. Cost USD $21, valid 2 years, multiple entries. Allow at least 72 hours, ideally 30 days.
  • Canada · eTA — CAD $7 electronic authorisation, valid 5 years. Mandatory even for transit through YYZ or YVR if you’re flying in.
  • Mexico · FMM — the Forma Migratoria MĂșltiple is free, completed online or at arrival. Keep the printout: you surrender it on departure.
  • Passport validity — six months beyond your return date for the US; six months beyond entry for Mexico; valid through stay for Canada.

AT&T Stadium — the second-largest cathedral of the tournament.

  • Capacity80,000
  • RoofRetractable
  • SurfaceNatural turf
  • AirportDFW · 15 mi

The largest dome in the NFL becomes a 80,000-seat fortress for World Cup 2026. Arlington isn’t Dallas — it sits halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth with no rapid transit. Booking a hotel within a 10-minute Uber of the stadium is the difference between a 20-minute trip and a three-hour ordeal on match day.

Tactical tip

Hotels on Lamar Boulevard or in the Texas Live entertainment district give you walking-distance access to both AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field. Book ten months out — rates triple in the final fortnight.

Getting from LA to Vancouver during World Cup

Three direct flights daily from LAX to Vancouver (YVR) on Air Canada, Alaska and WestJet. Average flight time 2 hr 55 min. Border pre-clearance happens at YVR on the return — allow 90 minutes. Direct flights from $189 USD if booked before March 2026.

NYC → Philadelphia · Acela

Northeast Corridor: rail, not flight

For matches in NJ and Philadelphia, the Amtrak Acela does the job in 75 minutes city-centre to city-centre, beating any flight once you count TSA. Fares run $89-$165 depending on class. Book three weeks ahead for the lowest brackets.

MEX → GDL · Domestic Mexico

Mexico City to Guadalajara without renting a car

Volaris, Viva and AeromĂ©xico fly the 460 km route ten times daily for as little as $45 USD one-way. The ETN Turistar overnight coach is comfortable, takes 7 hours, and lands you near Guadalajara’s old town for around $40. Skip the rental — parking near Estadio Akron is brutal.

Chapter 05 · Safety

Match-day safety,
city by city.

Each host city is its own world. Public-transport reliability, neighbourhood crime patterns, what to do if your wallet vanishes — the advice in Vancouver isn’t the advice in Mexico City. We publish localised briefings drawn from State Department, Global Affairs Canada and SRE Mexico advisories, cross-referenced with on-the-ground supporter reports.

  • Embassy contacts for every host city, plus 24-hour consular lines saved as offline contacts.
  • Travel insurance — US healthcare costs make a $40 policy potentially worth six figures.
  • Local SIM and eSIM — data is your lifeline. T-Mobile, Telcel and Rogers eSIMs we’ve tested.
  • FIFA Fan Festival safety protocols and what to do if you’re separated from your group.

Chapter 07 · Quick answers

Frequently asked.

10 Qs updated weekly

Only if you transit through a US airport. Many transatlantic routes to Toronto, Vancouver, or Mexico City stop in Houston, Dallas or Los Angeles — that triggers an ESTA requirement even if you never leave the airport. Check your itinerary segments before booking.

Now, if you haven’t already. Rooms within a 10-minute walk of MetLife, SoFi and Estadio Azteca were selling at 4–6x normal rates by mid-2025. Use Booking.com’s free-cancellation filter so you can rebook if your fixture city changes.

Yes, but check rental cross-border policies. Most US rental cars allow Canada but not Mexico. For Mexico, fly or use an in-country rental. Border-wait apps (CBP One, GoBorder) update wait times in real-time at land crossings.

For final-stage matches and the Final, hospitality packages are often the only legal way to secure tickets at face value. For group stage, official tickets via FIFA.com still go through ballot windows — check the FIFA Ticketing portal for dates.

A no-FX-fee card (Revolut, Wise, Chase Sapphire) plus a small cash reserve in each local currency. Always have a second card stored separately. Notify your bank of all three destination countries before you fly.

Mixed. New York, Mexico City, Toronto and Vancouver have strong rail links to stadia. Arlington (Dallas), Foxborough (Boston), and Kansas City require driving or shuttle services. Plan transport hours not minutes before kick-off.
